Antenatal Care

This information is about antenatal care, an essential aspect of prenatal health for expectant mothers. Our objective is to provide clear and concise guidance to aid in understanding the importance of antenatal care, identifying contributing factors to maternal and fetal well-being, and exploring effective strategies for promoting a healthy pregnancy and childbirth.

What is Antenatal Care?

Antenatal care is healthcare provided to pregnant women to monitor the health of both mother and baby throughout pregnancy. It includes regular check-ups, screenings, and support to ensure a healthy pregnancy and safe delivery.

Importance:

Atenatal care has had an enormously positive effect on the health outcomes for women and babies. Regular monitoring and support during pregnancy are essential to ensuring the well-being of both mother and baby and to detect any potential problems at an early stage.

What It Involves:

Antenatal care involves a series of appointments with healthcare providers to monitor the progress of pregnancy, assess maternal and foetal health, and identify any potential issues. Diagnostic tests, such as ultrasound scans and blood tests, may be performed to screen for conditions like gestational diabetes or foetal abnormalities.

There are several approaches to antenatal care. Some choose a private obstetrician, some the antenatal clinic at the public hospital, some the midwives clinic and some through a hybrid of their local GP and the antenatal clinic.

Visits Focus On:

  • Nutritional guidance: Advice on maintaining a balanced diet and taking prenatal vitamins to support maternal and foetal health.

  • Monitoring maternal health: Regular blood pressure checks, urine tests, and assessments of foetal growth and development.

  • Screening for complications: Tests for conditions such as gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, or infections that may affect pregnancy.

  • Lifestyle recommendations: Guidance on exercise, rest, and avoiding substances like alcohol and tobacco that may harm the developing baby.
